When the meeting room host first opens the Vantage Point console each participant is represented in the console by a viewport. The viewport provides a number of functions. These include actions like pinning a participant to the front of the console by clicking the pin icon, or activating a participant’s webcam and audio by clicking their viewport.
Every participant viewport includes a view information button.
The host clicks this button to open the information window.
A host can view:
- Location: The location of a participant based on their IP address displayed above the map as a written location and within the map by a marker. At times, this location may not represent the physical location of the participant if the IP address is behind a firewall. Or if the IP address is unknown the location will display as unknown.
- OS/Browser: The participant’s operating system, or the software that’s managing the participant’s computer hardware and software, is displayed along with whether the participant is using the Connect add in or a browser to view the meeting. This is particularly helpful when assisting a participant with technical support, as this information provides context to a participant’s virtual environment. If the participant is using a browser, the arrows icon allows the host to refresh a user’s browser for them. This cannot be done in the add-in.
- Version: The version displays which version of flash player or add-in the participant is using and helps provide details for technical support if the participant needs to update their version of flash player.
- Screen size: The screen size is important to know if a participant is having a difficult time viewing the meeting room. Generally a small monitor will display a crowded meeting room where the participant will have to use scrollbars to view all the components inside a meeting room. A typical desktop monitor displays at 1920px x 1080px and screen sizes smaller than this may mean the participant is using a laptop or other device to view the meeting.
- Speed test: The speed test allows the host to see how much capacity the participant has available, which is the bandwidth, and the size of the participant’s connection to the internet, which is the latency.
Latency that is 1000 milliseconds or less is generally good. A latency 2 seconds or less will produce OK results, but the video may not be in sync with the audio; and any latency above 2 seconds will cause an issue for the participant as this two second delay will result in stilted meeting room interaction. Latency is typically not a problem if a participant is just viewing the meeting. The arrows icon to the right allows a host to perform a rerun of the speed test at will.
- Ports: When viewing the ports, typically a host is most concerned with the active port. By default Flash uses port:1935. If the participant is behind a firewall without access to PORT:1935, the participant’s connection will show on PORT:443. Because this port is unrestricted, using this port may result in higher latency. If the participant is behind a very secure firewall, the participant’s connection may show on PORT:80 which is used for webpages. The consequence to using this port is that the connection is very latent. Participants who appear on PORT:80 have a restrictive firewall and generally a poor connection. If seeing a participant on PORT:80 check to see if the participant is having a bad experience and if they could connect outside of the firewall.
- Adobe Connect: Adobe Connect information shows in real time how much content is being uploaded and downloaded. This information is updated every 30 seconds.
- Camera(s): The camera(s) display which camera device the participant is using and which devices are available. By clicking on a camera device, a host can switch the camera device the participant is using. This is particularly helpful when a participant is having trouble identifying their webcam device.
- Microphone(s)The participant’s available microphones display as a list and the host can switch the audio connection by clicking on another microphone device, and can mute the audio or adjust the volume of the participant’s audio connection by making a selection from the range of numbers displayed at the bottom of the window. If the participant is using VOIP, a microphone icon appears in the video window, and if the participant is on the telephone, the number and type of connection is displayed.
- HD: The host can use the HD button to override Adobe Connect’s default video quality. Refined Data Solutions recommends only increasing the video quality for a specific participant as HD requires more bandwidth. Before selecting the HD button, make sure the participant has the connection to support HD and that other participants in the meeting room have connections available to receive the HD stream. The quality of the HD video is determined in the pod settings in the HD tab.
- Flip: Hosts can use the flip button to invert any participant’s video in their viewport.
- Eject: The eject button allows a host to remove a user from the meeting room entirely.
